Engin Akyürek, an esthete of emotions

It is not enough to have talent, talent that in the case of Engin Akyürek is undeniable. It is also necessary to have the courage and determination to expose himself to the cameras, as he does and, consequently, to the audience.

Getting in to the character's skin, Sancar Efeoglu, the protagonist in “Sefirin Kızı”(1), and impregnating part of himself, as Engin Akyürek does, without losing the “anima”, is truly remarkable and unique.

It's power of reinvention and regeneration after each episode and also, after each scene of intense dramatic and emotional charge, combined with physical exhaustion sometimes “on the edge”, (we are speaking of the main character), episode after episode, does not fail to surprise.

Where will this man go to get that energy that has allowed him to continue? Keep going, with a renewed sparkle in the eye, the modulated, colorful and fresh vocalization, it's silences that fill the spaces where words left the feelings hanging, the dramatic register suitable at each “momentum”...

Engin Akyürek is an esthete of emotions. And this aesthetics, understood as the capacity to produce emotions and thus awaken in us, audience, feelings.

In this regard, the filmaker and screenwriter Jean Renoir said that the “grand plan” is what distinguishes cinema from other forms of spectacle. “(...)It is a mysterious and strong connection between the character and the people at the theatre. The people at the theatre forget about themselves, penetrate the actor/actress on the screen, identify with him/her, and that is the great mystery of cinema(...)”.

And just as we forget about ourselves from time to time in the emotion produced by the contemplation of a “grand plan”, Engin Akyürek is permanently that “grand plan”. And that is what explains the overwhelming empathy he establishes with his audience.

1ª sessão numa sala de cinema após o desconfinamento! 16/05/2021 “ In the Mood for Love”, 2000 Wong Kar-Wai Vinte anos depois de o ter visto pela primeira vez numa sala de cinema, volto a usufruir dessa experiência avassaladora que é “In the Mood for Love”, no grande écran.
