Engin looks at the horizon
All Engin Akyürek's photos from the Marie Claire Man's (june 20,22) photo shooting are fantastic. The “punctum”(1) in all of them it's the whole!
But this photo is the one that best illustrates Roland Barthes's (2) definition of “punctum”.
Standing, almost full-length, head slightly turned to the left, on a sandy beach, staring at a distant point that we don't see but we assume to be far away on the horizon line, where the sea meets the sky...
Shirt and pants in a slightly dry olive green, fabric flowing and rippling in the wind, covering a body that can only be guessed at...
In addition to the visual impact of Engin himself, there is the impact of Engin's gaze “outside the field”, beyond what our gaze reaches.
We look at the photograph, we see Engin but not what he sees. And that's the “punctum”of the “punctum”!
What hurts/impresses the observer's retina is not only what he sees, but also the knowlege that, what Engin sees, whoever observes, cannot know.
The enchantment of the mystery captivates even more...
Engin has a physical and emotional readiness to surrender to light and its capture by the camera lens, never seen before.
In everything he does, passion and empathy are present and Engin Akyürek can thus transform the grayest day into a rainbow of emotion and feeling.

. Punctum - “the punctum points to those features of a photograph that seem to produce or convey a meaning without invoking any recognizable symbolic system. This kind of meaning is unique to the response of the individual viewer of the image. The punctum punctuates the studium and as a result pierces it's viewer.”
.Roland Barthes- french writer, sociologist and philosopher, 20th century
