Yolun Açık Olsun

Film review

The story we are told in “Yolun Açık Olsun” is powerful and impactful!

An excellent script,

An inspired direction,

A sublime photography,

An immersive soundtrack,

A flawless direction of actors and the fantastic performances of

Engin Akyürek, Captain Salih

Tolga Sarıtaş, Kerim

Belfu Benian, Duygu

The film has a very special aesthetic and careful photography. The game of light and shadows works as a narrative element and marks the different times in which the action takes place. The gradations of gray are Captain Salih's tormented past and the palette of warm and luminous tones, the carefree and light life of the young soldier Kerim.

The sound track is also a fundamental element. Not only to dictate the “mood” but also to give it a poetic aura and thus accentuate the dramatic weight.

Salih's voice, even in his tormented silence, is heard through melancholic melodies that accompany him on his journey, on his return from the world of the dead to finally return to life, in the world of the living.

you cannot die with the dead,

you must live with the living.” Kerim (11' 55'')

And the symbolism continues...with the partridge that Salih tries in vain to free and accompanies him, lifeless, on the journey through deep, inhospitable and arid Turkey.

you cannot die with the dead,

you must live with the living.” Duygu (1h 48')

And the moment Duygu frees Salih from the abyss of suffering and guilt that he alone has returned from the world of the dead. By giving him the news of the pregnancy of his son Kerim, it prevents his suicide and brings him back to life!

In the reality of this “road trip” is a mind-boggling descent into hell and redemption at the last moment, before the jump into the abyss.

How can we forgive, in ourselves, the mistakes of others and appease the feeling of guilt in front of the powerlessness in face of horror?

Captain Salih:

Engin Akyürek embodied “that other”, Captain Salih, in the masterful way he has acustomed us throughout his filmography.

As if there was no “tomorrow” and this was his last ascent to the scene, the last “take” and his last breath of life!

Breathing emotion, feeling and pain through every pore in his body. Simply masterful!

Engin Akyürek,

Virtuous and brilliant...

Telluric and ethereal...

Body, spirit and soul!

A sublime and solitary “Aslan” that fills on screen, the collective imaginary of this tormented 21st century.

Maşallah!

On a “road trip” inside ourselves, this film is a “punch in the stomack”of our conscience.

Yolun Açık Olsun” is a masterpiece of contemporary cinema.

1ª sessão numa sala de cinema após o desconfinamento! 16/05/2021 “ In the Mood for Love”, 2000 Wong Kar-Wai Vinte anos depois de o ter visto pela primeira vez numa sala de cinema, volto a usufruir dessa experiência avassaladora que é “In the Mood for Love”, no grande écran.
